What this tool does

This checker tells you what work your teenager can legally do in the UK, including the minimum age for different jobs, how many hours they can work, the rest breaks they are entitled to, and where pubs, kitchens and shops fit in.

It is general guidance to help you understand the rules, not legal advice.

When to use it

Use it when your child wants a part-time or holiday job and you want to check it is allowed, when you are not sure how many hours they can work around school, or when a particular type of work, like a kitchen or a bar, raises a question.

How it works

You enter your teenager's age, the type of work and whether it is term time or the holidays. It then explains the rules that apply to them, including the limits on hours and times of day, required breaks, and job specific restrictions. Nothing you enter is saved, and you do not need to give your name or email to use it. Local councils set their own byelaws and may require a work permit, so check with your local authority before your child starts.
